Performance notes on Merlin’s Suite del Recuerdo:

Evocacion from Suite del Recuerdo – Understand what notes comprise the melody and bring those out while keeping the accompaniment in the background. Along those lines, keep a strong sense of legato when playing the melody so that there are no gaps that disrupt the continuity of the melody line. The second section of the piece (A-A-B-B – so the B section) gets a bit trickier with chords higher up on the neck. Consider different fingering options if a chord shape causes you hesitation or difficulty which breaks up the flow of the piece. Or even consider leaving out some of the accompaniment so that the melody line is unbroken. Evocacion occurs twice in the suite – notice the different ending the second time and also consider playing it the second time without the repeats as well as playing it slightly different the second time. Notice the different pieces that follow the first version of Evocacion and the second. This may influence how you present it the first and second times.

Zamba from Suite del Recuerdo – It’s easy to fail to separate the melody from the accompaniment here as well.  Bring out the melody and keep the accompaniment in the background.  The most difficult part for me occurs in the third section and nailing the chord changes.  Practice the chord changes and make them second nature.  For guidance on the strums, consult the front of the publication.  Also there is a run that occurs six times total.  It’s first appearance is at the beginning of the sixth measure.  It’s easy to have this come out choppy.  So practice with an eye towards smoothing it out.  Try to keep the fingers down throughout as many of the chord changes as you can to promote a legato movement.

Chacarera from Suite del Recuerdo – After the intro, you come across a figure that is repeated three times before getting to the heart of the matter.  This figure comes up after each section.  Instead of strumming the chords in this figure, I pluck them to keep my fingers on the strings.  This makes this figure much easier.  Later this figure changes by strumming the notes with the “a” finger.  Keep the “a” finger relaxed while doing this.

Carnavalito from Merlin’s Suite del Recuerdo – Your metronome is your best friend with Carnavalito. Set the tempo where you can play the four stroke arpeggios comfortably and distinctly and then ease it up as you gain proficiency. Practice your transitions from, for example, the three stroke arpeggio to the four stroke arpeggio. Memorize by knowing how many times you arpeggiate each chord at the beginning. Strumming and chord changes at the end aren’t bad – practice making smooth chord changes.
